Abstract

Viola x wittrockiana (pansy flower) is a cross breed plant for ornamentation, kitchen use and pharmaceutical industry. Seeds were soaked in three concentrations (5, 10 and 20 mg.L-1) of gibberellic acid (GA3) for four different periods (30, 60, 120 and 180 min) to analyze the acid´s influence on the germination of pansy seeds. After treatments, the plates were maintained in a germination chamber (BOD) at 25°C ± 2 and under white light of fluorescent lamps at 116 µmol.m-2.s-1, with a 12-h photoperiod. Data from daily monitoring were employed for calculating germination capacity, germination speed index and average germination time. The best treatment for germination capacity and average germination time was concentration 5 mg.L-1 during 30 min. exposure and the best germination speed indexes occurred at 180 minutes exposure in all GA3 concentrations.
