Abstract

Current essay discusses whether the rights of prisoners with regard to work and education are complied with in the state of Pará, Brazil, specifically in the state and metropolitan prison (PEM II) so that human dignity is maintained and incentives to re-socialization are undertaken. The dialectic approach is undertaken, coupled to review of the literature, documental research, a case study, research-activity, data analyses by qualitative and quantitative research. Results showed that the prison term, plus education and work, is not being developed according to the Law of Penal Execution. Prisons had a harder problem to cope with: or rather over-population, mostly occupied by provisional prisoners, with an improvement in educational and labor assistance conceded to the convicts.
