The Brazilian business community usually resist approving the proposal for a constitutional amendment (PEC 231/95), which forecasts the reduction of the weekly labor hours into forty hours per week. After researching the State regulation in Brazil and to establish premises for the discussion over the theme, the article concludes that the mentioned approval shall depend less from the ability to discuss the subject by the interested sectors than the correlation forces that shall be established within the society.
