Abstract

Insecticide and repellant activity of the ethanol extract from Pachira aquatica seeds on Hypothenemus hampei was evaluated. Vegetal material was macerated with ethanol 95% for seven days to obtain the crude extract. Solvent was then left to evaporate and the ethanol extract obtained. The extract’s insecticide activity (25 mg/mL-1) was performed by the application on a contaminated surface and by topic application. Repellant activity of the extract was undertaken in healthy coffee fruits. Results were analyzed by ANOVA and by Tukey’s test (p? 0.01). Extract had highest insecticide activity when exposed on a contaminated surface (100% death rate in 4 h) in contrast to topic application (62% death rate in 5 h). In the case of repellant activity, the extract inhibited 80% of the insects’ attraction to coffee fruit when compared to 20% of control. Results show that P. aquatica seeds have insecticide and repellant activity on H. hampei.
