Abstract

Osteoporosis is a grave public health problem since it increases considerably bone fracturing in post-menopause females, especially the most elderly. Post-menopause women should be evaluated with regard to osteoporosis risk when attended to in health clinics since early intervention for the maintenance or increase of bone mass may reduce bone fracture risks. The feasibility of the software SAPORI was tested in post-menopause women in the municipality of Catanduva SP Brazil by a population study, as an evaluation protocol for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. In fact, it is a simple, low cost and fast method for the patient and for health authorities. Fifty post-menopause females, aged between 55 and 65 years old and chosen at random for ethnic group and social class, were evaluated. They were invited by word of mouth to participate in the project. Study design was transversal by questioning based on evaluated data of the program SAPORI (Unifesp). Data analysis confirmed the evaluation program SAPORI as a plain, low cost strategy that identified subjects with high bone fracture risks by osteoporosis in tandem with or without bone mineral densitometry.
