Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different types of lamps and their association with cage position and the age of laying hens during the second production cycle under the environmental conditions of the Amazon. The experiment was conducted using 112 Hisex Brown laying hens in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, in which the factors evaluated were: type of lamp used in the poultry house (incandescent or fluorescent), cage position (upper or lower), and age of the laying hens (90 and 100 weeks), with cages (containing four birds each) considered as the experimental replicates. Age had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on all performance variables, with younger hens exhibiting higher egg production, greater egg mass, and better feed conversion ratio. In the evaluation of egg quality, older hens produced eggs with lower (p < 0.05) internal quality and reduced eggshell thickness. Regarding the effect of lamp type, fluorescent lamps improved Haugh unit and albumen height, whereas incandescent lamps resulted in greater eggshell thickness, without exerting a significant effect (p > 0.05) on overall performance. Cage position had no significant impact (p > 0.05) on either bird performance or egg quality. It was concluded that the age of the laying hens and the type of lamp directly influence performance and egg quality, with younger hens showing superior performance, fluorescent lamps improving the internal quality of eggs, and incandescent lamps promoting greater eggshell thickness, whereas cage position did not demonstrate a significant effect.
